Art on the Prom

Felixstowe is ready for its Day Of Art.

The fifth annual Art on the Prom takes place tomorrow, Sunday 31st August. With over 70 artists represented, free workshops, and live entertainment to enjoy along Felixstowe's beautiful seafront between the War Memorial and the Fludyers, the event begins at 10am and runs until 4pm. Well worth a visit!

An excellent read

A great story from Morag. Well worth buying a copy!

Where did it come from?

Interesting report on Felixstowe TV by Chris Gosling showing how Felixstowe's new beach was pumped ashore. Amazing!

Open Poetry Competition

Our Next Meeting

Our next meeting takes place this coming Tuesday 2nd September starting at 7.30pm in the Café Libra in Felixstowe Library.

The 500 word homework assignment was declared as "SAUSAGES" and whether you like them or not, this is a subject to get your teeth into! The open themed 1,500 word work will be delivered by Stephen and Tony. Providing all goes well it is Morag's turn to chair the meeting.

Rapidly approaching is the Jack Wilkinson Memorial Walk in aid of Cancer Research that is due to take place on Sunday 14th September. Details are available from Dick and you are able to select either a 5 or 9 mile sponsored walk.

Also one to watch out for, The Bill Budner Trophy. This is an anonymous competition for attending writers only. Details will be revealed at our meeting. Dick, seen in the photo receiving the trophy from Morag, will have to relinquish his grip on it!

There has been some painful times for Debbie in France. She has been bed bound for three weeks with a very painful back and has needed injections for the pain relief. We all send our best wishes to Debbie wishing her a full and speedy recovery. I understand that she will soon be in contact with Barry regarding Online Scribblers so hopefully the site will be re-activated in the coming weeks.

Whilst on the subject of the afflicted Dave thanks everyone for their wishes and the card. It seems the cataract removal went well but he has to wait another three weeks before seeing the optician. All being well Dave should be at Tuesdays meeting.

Hope you'll all be there too!

Until then

Keep Scribbling!

SUNPENNY PUBLISHING NEWSLETTER
Keeping you up to date with the happenings at Sunpenny Publishing, Rose&Crown Books, and Sunberry Books (IdioScribe).
-----------------------------

Sunpenny is surging forward with new authors, new competitions, and new imprints - all very exciting stuff! Travel with us!

RESULTS OF MAY (SPRING) 2008 WRITING COMPETITIONS:

The results are out! Congratulations to all our winners; we had a very high standard of entries and judging was not an easy task. In most cases, literally fractions of points separated them! Visit the web site www.sunpenny.com for lists of winners and the best of the stories. (If you would like the results posted to you for any of the divisions, please send us a properly stamped, addressed envelope and state which results you need.)

CURRENT WRITING COMPETITIONS:

Our next writing competitions are open for entries! 4 short story categories, and one for new novels:

"New Writers", "Young Writers", "Open", and "Christian" categories - www.sunpenny.com - Deadline: 31st October.

"New Novels" Competition: www.roseandcrownbooks.com - top three winners are guaranteed publication contracts, and every entry receives a Critique! Deadline 15th January 2009.

NEW AUTHORS & BOOKS:

We have been very busy bringing new authors into our fold! Visit our AUTHORS page at www.sunpenny.com to see who they are, and what books are in the pipeline.

FRANKFURT BOOK FAIR:

Although we will not be personally travelling to Frankfurt this year, three of our books will be represented on the Combined Books stand: "The Mountains Between" and "Just One More Sumemr" by Julie McGowan, and "Dance of Eagles" by JS Holloway. More will be in print in time for next year's book fairs!

NEW IMPRINTS:

Sunpenny Publishing is and remains a "traditional" publisher, in that authors are not required to pay towards the cost of producing their books. We have now created two new imprints:-

Rose & Crown Books (also "traditional") has been created to focus on Inspirational Romance, in all categories: straight romance, historical, suspense, mystery, adventure, travel, thriller, etc. Visit www.roseandcrownbooks.com for details.

Sunberry Books has been created to help authors towards publication, either with individual services (critique/analysis, advice, editing, proofreading, cover design, illustration, layout, final preparation, etc) - or in taking your manuscript from submission to printed publication delivered to your door (author-funded, or self-publishing). This section has been set up because we understand how difficult it is for authors to find reliable services such as these (we have been appalled at the quality of books some of the large, well known self-publishing services have been turning out!), or to get published by traditional methods. We undertake most genres, including poetry and children's works, non-fiction, and most fiction. Visit www.sunberrybooks.com for details.

That's all for now. Remember, we're always open to questions; contact us.
Kind regards,
Jo Holloway

Creative Writing Courses

CREATIVE WRITING COURSES ON PAXOS IN SUMMER 2009

If you have ever wanted to hone your creative writing skills, what better place to do so than on the Greek island of Paxos, a truly inspirational location in the Ionian Sea just nine miles south of Corfu?

And you now have the opportunity to do just that, because in May 2009 we shall be running two writing courses here that will be suitable for both complete beginners and also for those with more experience.

Both courses will be led by Judi Goodwin, a journalist and trainer with wide experience in both print and broadcast media. Judi has been a regular feature writer for The Daily Telegraph, Radio Times, Manchester Evening News, Homes and Gardens, House Beautiful and Ideal Home. And for five years she was also a freelance broadcaster for BBC Radio on Woman’s Hour and You and Yours. Judi runs courses in London for professional writers and has trained journalists on some of Britain’s leading magazines.

‘Writing and Selling Features’ (5 – 9 May 2009) is aimed at anyone who wants to learn how to write about travel, hobbies, people, life experiences, personal or professional matters and find a market for their articles. The course will teach you all the tricks of the journalist’s trade, including how to find and develop stories, write and interview like a pro, and successfully pitch ideas; in fact, all the know-how you need to get your articles into print.

‘Unleash Your Writing Power’ (12 – 16 May 2009) is an inspirational and innovative workshop that will unblock the barriers to your creativity and provide an opportunity to build confidence, power and fluency in an atmosphere of fun and discovery. Whether you want to write stories, family history, articles or best sellers – even business communications or a personal journal - come and discover skills you may never have realised you had. Equally suitable for experienced writers or beginners, this workshop will help you inject energy, power and magic into everything you write. Learn the secret of really connecting with your readers at a deep and powerful level by first connecting with yourself.

Each course will consist of five half-day group sessions and there will also be the opportunity for some one-to-one sessions, when you will be able to talk over individual difficulties, projects, ambitions or concerns. The courses are equally suitable for those with previous experience and for complete beginners; what is important is a desire to write.

We shall be marketing the courses inclusive of accommodation in a shared villa, and so they will be ideal for anyone travelling alone.

Prices will be available shortly and, as there will be just 12 places on each course, early booking will be essential. There will be a special early booking price if you book by 31 December 2008 and, if you book both courses, we will also discount the price of the second course.

So come a join a group of like-minded people for two most enjoyable and informative weeks, and at the same time have a wonderful holiday in a fabulous location. Email chris@paxoslife.com now to register your interest and we will then advise you of the confirmed prices as soon as these are available.

For further information about the creative writing courses and our many other holiday courses and activities, please visit our website www.paxoslife.com.

Report of the Meeting

FELIXSTOWE SCRIBBLERS NEWSHEET

Incorporating
the

REPORT OF THE MEETING HELD 19th AUGUST 2008

In the Chair: Dick.

Apologies for absence were received from Rosie, Morag and Dave.

In attendance: Barry, Peter, Tony, Lauren, Jack, Jayne, Les, Alex, Trish, Liliane, Dick, Stephen and Angela.

A warm welcome was given to Angela who has recently moved into Felixstowe. A keen tennis player, Angela was the winner of this years IpArt Short Story Competition

SCRIBBLERS NEWS

Rosie is still on holiday but hopefully will resume at our next meeting in September. The news from Morag is quite exciting as a short story that was accepted by People’s Friend over a year ago will finally be published in this week’s issue. Well done Morag! Unable to attend because of work, Morag should resume next time. Dave had a cataract removed and is feeling fine although he will not be able to drive for a while.

Really good news comes from Alex who has passed levels 1 and 2 of his literature course, so many congratulations Alex!

Bumped into a former member of our group, Richard, who is doing well these days although his writing has dried up for the time. He keeps abreast of our events via the newsletters and says he would like to return one day.

Here’s something interesting to do with publication of an anthology. It comes from Belinda in Queensland who has been in touch again to say that her writers’ club book launch went well and their anthology has already sold out. They had a tremendous book launch at their local library with the Deputy Mayor doing the honours in front of a really good crowd. Belinda had three pieces in the book including an editing hic-up with one of her stories. There were some behind the scenes tension and disputes that not all members knew about with someone trying to take over and control things.

Belinda says “It sure is interesting to see the dynamics when you work or enter into group activities – and not just in a writer’s group. Our first editor wanted to change stories to read how she liked to read stories which is how mine got changed and then, to top it all off, wanted her name on all the front pages! Talk about strict with grammar and spelling – it was way over the top for today’s writing, be it politically correct or not, and has loosened up from the rigid 1930’s when it seems this woman was raised. Anyway the book finally saw the light of day and was published to a lot of credit to the group.”

Things like that don’t happen at Scribblers, do they? Well do they?

Just a brief reminder that the Jack Wilkinson Memorial Walk in aid of Cancer Research takes place on Sunday 14th September with the choice of either a 5 mile or 9mile sponsored walk. Details and sponsorship forms are available from Dick.

THE PLATFORM

Angela made her Scribblers debut reading out her winning entry from the IpArt Short Story Competition : “Home Thoughts”.

Another entertaining evening, so pleasing to hear Angela’s work, the non-fiction recollections of Les’s time in a drama group and Peter’s words about birds and Jayne with her twist in the tail. Some really good words from all.

Thanks to Dick for providing the meeting notes.

OUR NEXT MEETING

Our next meeting takes place this coming Tuesday 19th August starting at 7.30pm in the Café Libra in Felixstowe Library.

The 500 word homework assignment was declared as "BRAINS" and whether you use them or just sit on them, this is a subject which will get you thinking! The open themed 1,500 word work will be delivered by Liliane and Les. Dick will chair the meeting..

There is a reminder of the Jack Wilkinson Memorial Walk in aid of Cancer Research that is due to take place on Sunday 14th September with a personal choice of selecting either a 5 mile or 9 mile sponsored walk. Please check with Dick for full details. Did you realise that it is two years ago that Jack so sadly passed away?

There is also an exciting event being held at the Belstead Brook Hotel just two days earlier on Friday 12th September in aid of the East Anglian Childrens Hospice. There is a three course meal together with Billy West as Freddie Mercury, a disco and cabaret. Tickets must be booked in advance and you can see a poster and details on this weblog below.

Also featuring on our weblog is the Irish Post Journalism prize winner, one time Felixstowe Scribbler, Geraldine Rose, with her article 'Making Skeletons Dance'. Geraldine was absolutely thrilled and received her prize at the Writers Week festival held at the Listowel Arms Hotel. Well done Geraldine!

During the past week the weblog has included details of various writing competitions (you may need to go to the Scribblers Weblog Archives for August 2008 on the side bar) and also some of the books that our Scribblers have written. Makes interesting viewing...

Keep an eye open for the return of Online Scribblers in the coming weeks. It was sad to see its near demise but with Barry taking the helm and Rosie also helping, the only way is back up again!

We have received some good wishes from our friend Belinda down in Queensland where they are in their winter with temperatures of only 27°C. Poor folk! Belinda says:

"Next week the writer's group I'm involved with here has it's book launch for an Anthology called THE PYTHON SPEAKS which is very exciting and has given us all an insight as to how big a thing it can be to get published. We were lucky as we applied for a local Govt Grant and were accepted with quite a nice amount of money to assist us with the basics. Last week at our meeting a 'hot off the press' copy was shown - the first time the completed book had been seen by most members and I missed it because I was in class some 40 minutes away so I couldn't even sneak out at lunch or turn up for the early part of the meeting. I am still writing but more in class these days than but I have been working on a couple of children's stories so I hope to continue to squeeze in time to write even if it is only short stories and verse. I am now studying at an Institute at a great beach town called Maroochydore for a Diploma Remedial Master Therapist course and I wonder if there is a need for Remedial Therapists in the UK as Geoff and I still talk of returning. Love to all the Scribblers, from Belinda and Geoff xxxxx"

There has also been some news from our latest author, Judy. Along with Ron they have just arrived back from a lengthy summer cruise. She says:

"We were late starting out as there was so much to do re the book. I had to go round loads of local bookshops etc. and it took considerable time as well as causing considerable stress. Then we set off for our trip and were promptly hit by some idiot tacking across the channel - lots of damage to his boat and some damage to Fram's bow, so back to the boatyard for some days of repair. The weather was really windy all the time but we enjoyed the peace. I managed to get plenty of writing done on my novel - Burma is in abeyance until we return in January - which was fun. Also did a lot of painting as that took a back space while the book stuff was going on. We have been home for almost a week and the garden is still half a jungle, though we are off again next week in order to celebrate my birthday. Life does not get any less hectic.

"Things seem to be going quietly well with the book though I try not to get too involved. I have never been interested in making money out of it (good job) and in an odd way would prefer not to know how well or badly it is doing. All I know is that a couple of bookshops have contacted me as they have sold all their copies. Best Wishes, Judy."

Hope you can all make the meeting on Tuesday,

Keep Scribbling!

Geraldine scoops the Journalism Prize

Back in April this year we were pleased to announce that a Scribbler of old, Geraldine Rose won the Irish Post Journalism prize with an article called 'Making Skeletons Dance'. Geraldine was absolutely thrilled and went over to receive her prize at the Writers Week festival held at the Listowel Arms Hotel at the end of May.

Facing the final weekend as funding dries up

A worrying story has appeared on the pages of Felixstowe TV at http://www.felixstowetv.co.uk concerning the very sad decision to withdraw the Felixstowe's Volunteer Coast Patrol Rescue Service. It reads: -

Guardian Rescue Faces Final Weekend As Funding Dries Up

Rising fuel prices, unplanned maintenance costs, and little ongoing funding, mean that Felixstowe's Volunteer Coast Patrol Rescue Service, which celebrated its 10th birthday last year, will not be able to run any more after this weekend.

Founder and chairman John Cresswell said, "The decision to withdraw the service while the resort and the service is busy is very disappointing. Over the 11 years we have been running, we have made hundreds of rescues, with several lives being saved."

Although not a lifeboat, the service, which ran for 47 days during weekends and bank holidays last summer, patrols the Felixstowe coastline and river estuaries, covering up to 4,000 miles in a season, and can be called on by coastguards. The Volunteer Coast Patrol Rescue Service, or 'Guardian Rescue', was first launched during carnival weekend in 1997. However, apart from a regular grant from Felixstowe Town Council, most of the volunteers' annual £18,000 - £20,000 running costs have to be raised through donations every year.

If you are able to support Guardian Rescue, please contact John Cresswell through Felixstowe TV.

Report of Meeting and Newsheet

REPORT OF THE MEETING HELD 5th AUGUST 2008

In the Chair: Dave.

Apologies for absence were received from Ruth, Trish, Rosie and Alex.

In attendance: Lauren, Jane and son Jack, Barry, Dick, Liliane, Tony, Peter, Les, Morag, Dave and Paul.

A warm welcome was given to Jane’s son Jack, a talented 13 year old Farlingaye School pupil who has already had a poem published. Also Paul attended for the first time on recommendation of Ruth. He is one of a small group of three Shotley writers and is currently close to finishing his first novel.

SCRIBBLERS NEWS

It’s the holiday season and Rosie is on holiday with her father whilst Trish is also touring somewhere o’er the border in Scotland and Ruth is also away on holiday believed to be somewhere in France.

Angela Petch, winner of the IpArt Short story competition was unable to attend the meeting but promises to come along soon. The keen tennis player had a tournament in
Framlingham and so we hope the weather held for her!

From http://www.fivetvonline.tv/news.php?news=825
For the past few weeks Five News and the Charities Aid Foundation have been searching for Britain's Kindest Kid. We've been looking to recognise children who have shown considerable kindness by giving up their free time to raise money to help a charity or good cause. Liam Fairhurst is a shining example.

Despite suffering from cancer himself, 13-year-old Liam is trying to help other kids in the same situation. He's been instrumental in raising nearly a quarter of a million pounds for charity. So he's a very worthy winner of our prize - a thousand pounds pocket money, and a thousand pounds for his charity - CLIC Sargent, which helps children with cancer.

Typical of the lovely natured Liam he has decided to share his prize with the other finalists so that more charities would benefit.

On the fund raising theme, the Jack Wilkinson Memorial Walk in aid of Cancer Research takes place on Sunday 14th September with the choice of either a 5 mile or 9 mile sponsored walk. Details and sponsorship forms will be available from Dick at the next meetings.

ONLINE SCRIBBLERS

There is still hope for Online Scribblers and Debbie the administrator has been in touch after having a deserved holiday, has promised to initially help in the transfer of responsibilities to get the group on line and working again. Interested parties are being informed.

THE PLATFORM

1,500 word opened themed assignments.

Jane: Stranger in the Night.
Peter: Written Proof.

500 word themed assignments on “Employment.”

Lauren: Untitled (Employment).
Jack: Older.
Barry: Chapter 21
Dick: Welcome to Your Very First Job.
Liliane: You’d Better Get a Job.
Tony: The Inn on the Square.
Les: More Than My Jobs Worth.
Morag: A Less Than Civil Office
Dave; What a Job, Boy, What a Job.

An evening of fascinating stories surrounding the theme which seemed quite easy to write about as most of us are experienced in the subject. Except for Lauren and Jack of course. However they both showed great vision in providing quite poignant words.

Well done to Jane for another excellent story and to Peter for a real change in direction.

Thanks to Lauren yet again for providing the cakes, to Liliane for collecting the key and to everyone helping set out then clear up the Library.

Our Next Meeting

Is in TWO weeks time in the Café Libra, Felixstowe Library, on Tuesday 19th August, at 7.30pm.

Homework Assignment.

The opened themed 1,500 word work will be provided by Les and Liliane whilst everyone else is invited to write 500 words on “BRAINS”.

And so that you can keep up to date with everything happening in the District (not only during the summer but on a regular basis), we will be sending you a monthly listing, beginning with August 08. The SCAN listing will be solely arts-based and sent exclusively to SCAN members. If you have problems opening the attachment, let me know and I will post one to your home or business address.
We will also include other information that you may find useful or interesting. For example, this month we would like to give you a 'heads-up' about the second annual round of our Suffolk Coastal Arts Small Grants Scheme. Full details will be sent to you in late August, with the September listing - so if you are have a project planned that could benefit from our modest grant pot, then look out for your next SCAN email!
The Suffolk Coastal Arts Directory is due for re-publication in early 2009, so if you are aware of an organisation or individual that should be included in the new issue, please let us know. You can view the directory on www.suffolkcoastal.gov.uk/yourfreetime/arts/directory. SCAN members will automatically receive an application form in the autumn.
New SCAN members are welcome, whether professional or amateur artists, or devotees of the Arts. So spread the word and we will be more than happy to add new members to the mailing list - just ask them to get in touch via email (or phone 01394 444538) .
We hope you enjoy the many and varied events on offer during the summer - give us your feedback, we would like to hear what you have to say!

BOMBS HERE, GRENADES THERE....

Reports have filtered through that High Road East between the Orwell roundabout and Picketts Road was closed earlier today by a hand grenade reportedly found in a nearby back garden.

It seems that the Royal Air Force bomb disposal team attended the incident. Seems strange that less than a week ago the same bomb disposal unit was up in Ipswich to clear away another grenade yet the road stayed open.

Could it be that Felixstowe is more explosive than Ipswich? Or was this making certain that this one didn't get away....?

Whatever you think, spare a thought for the brave men who regularly attend to war time ordnance making our land a safer place to live.
